John Barry 1933-2011

John BarryOne of my favorite past-times to collect and listen to movie soundtracks, and anyone who ever had such a hobby cannot begin without experiencing the music of John Barry. Barry passed away January 31st, 2011 at the age of 78. Barry has a numerous catalog of soundtracks that are known through-out the world, including composing one of the most famous themes of all time for a British spy, 007. John Barry’s life is well chronicled, as well as the numerous awards he as earned, all at IMDB.

“He’s never satisfied with what he does. Every day he wakes up and believes that into his mind and soul is going to come some magical arrangement of notes that he’s going to ultimately either entrance you with in a concert hall or cinema. It’s because he thinks there’s still a peak to climb that he’s a great film music composer.” Sir Richard Attenborough eloquently explains what so many other directors feel about working with John Barry. Their success together in 1992 with Chaplin (1992) is a superb example of what his music does for a motion picture. Robert Downey Jr.‘s portrayal of the comic legend is given a tragic soul by the score; an element “Dickie” never dreamed of. The result (nominated for an Oscar) is but one of Barry’s magical arrangement of notes.

And The New Superman is…..

The Superman reboot project by Christopher Nolan and Zach Snyder has released who will be filling in the big blue boy scout’s boots:

henry cavillHenry Cavill

Who the hell is Henry Cavill? IMDB had this bio:

Henry Cavill grew up in Jersey, Channel Islands. Jersey is his home but he is currently, in his own words, “floating around the world.” He has four brothers and a pet parrot.

Henry Cavill was a main actor the boarding school he attended. The boarding school, Stowe School, is located in Buckingham. His roles include Oberon in a rendition of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, and Sonny in “Grease”. He also starred as Hamlet in “40 Minutes”, which he also happens to have directed. Henry Cavill starred in Dennis Berry’s Laguna opposite Joe Mantegna. He enjoyed working in Laguna more than all his other movies because he played the lead and therefore developed a close relationship with the director.

Since then he has appeared in a couple of well-known movies such as The Count of Monte Cristo and I Capture the Castle. He also has a number of lesser-known movies, and television movies. He delivered a captivating performance as Chas Quilter in Inspector Lynley’s Mysteries: Well-Schooled in Murder.

He has worked with the actor Bill Nighy twice, once in I Capture the Castle and also Well-Schooled in Murder. He has worked with the young actor Joe Sowerbutts three times, also in ‘Capture’, ‘Well-Schooled’ and briefly in Goodbye, Mr. Chips.

Although this actor has many fans, there is very little information known about him.

Deadline reported the news earlier and here is some interesting news about a batman audition from Henry’s Past:

Cavill just wrapped production on The Cold Light of Day and stars in the upcoming Immortals, opening this fall. Directed by Tarsem Sing, Caville in Immortals plays the he-man Greek warrior Theseus who battles mythological gods including Poseidon, Zeus, Minotaur, and Herecles. Given that set up, Warner Bros clearly has chosen a more macho leading man for Superman than the previous Brandon Routh. And just like it did with Christian Bale in the Batman reboot, the studio has gone with a British actor. In fact, Cavill also auditioned for the Batman role but lost out to Bale in 2005. He also was a contender for James Bond but was deemed too young and lost out to Daniel Craig. Clearly, Cavill is a franchise waiting to happen.

Pixar's UP! in 1965

Up live-actionWhilst reading GeekTyrant, I stumbled upon this little gem, and had to share it. I really love it when someone puts the time an effort to bring movies into a different light. Hell, I never got tired of all the fan-versions of Inception, and if I’m feeling blue I usually watch the trailer for Shining. This kind of project take a lot of love and diving through a few film vaults to bring something this unique.
