Movie Review: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

Scott Pilgrim Movie Poster

Yes, I finally saw the film a few days ago, and have just gotten around to writing down my thoughts. If you have heard a few episodes of the podcast, you know that I thought I was too old for the book. I had reached a certain point where I didn’t really care about a slacker’s crush on a girl, or how “revolutionary” it’s storytelling style was by incorporating video games. I liked the story devices, and thought the art style and panels were a clever storytelling technique, but I just didn’t take to it.

Upon hearing the news of there being a Scott Pilgrim movie, I didn’t much care. I was glad another comic book property that other readers enjoyed would be making its way to theaters, but past that nothing. And then I learned Edgar Wright would be directing. Game on. I am a huge Edgar Wright fan. I own all his directorial projects with exception to some of the guest directing TV shows he did for BBC. And after thumbing though the book again, I knew that would be a perfect match. The swift transitions and quirky humor that defined Spaced would be well-honed technique for this movie.

And it served well. The quick edits and fast jokes keep the movie from getting too serious, and help viewers stay immersed in the world that Brian Lee O’Malley wrote and illustrated. The graphic insertiosn like the character bios and other effects help define the movie as “Scoot Pilgrim”, and were a contributing factor to this movie’s ability to be entertaining on repeat viewings.  Michael Cera was a point of contention for some fans and I can sympathize to a degree. The guy hasn’t been able to stretch his range, so he seems to be playing the same guy over and over. However, his delivery and timing are spot on. While he wasn’t the Scott Pilgrim from the comics, he was a more enjoyable one to me. What turned me off about the main character was his slacker ways, and his ignorance.  The movie cuts much of that (probably for time and pace) and between the smart edits and Cera’s performance Scott became a character I could become interested in.

The cast itself is loaded with talent: Alison Pill, Mark Webber, Anna Kendrick, Chris Evans, Brandon Routh, and Jason Schwartzman. Two members that’ stole the show were Kieran McCulkin for his role as Wallace Wells (gay roommate) and Ellen Wong for her portrayal of Knives Chau. She was exactly as I had read her. Cute, heart crushing, and spunky. McCulkin delivered brilliant moments every time he was on screen. Classic performances that made the movie a gem to watch. Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s performance as Romona Flowers was exactly as I had read her too. Perfect casting, with great acting to follow up with true portrayals of the characters that readers are familiar with. There are several cameos that stand out, but for the sake of those who haven’t watched the film yet, I will leave the better one anonymous.

So was it good? Yes. And even as a reader that felt “too old” to appreciate the books, I loved watching it. It didn’t seem like the drippy adventures of a lazy man-boy, but a young guy on a Street-fighter-inspired quest to conquer a girl’s heart. My wife and I are still hitting each other up with quotes, and laughing at scenes that happened in the movie (Window diving). It was funny, fast-paced, energetic, emotional, and just plain fun. It ranks high on my Summer Movies of 2010 list, and I would bet dollars to donuts that it will be a permanent fixture on the turner networks. A year from now you will be able to turn on TBS or TNT and this will be playing.

Scotty would be proud…would also state that “She can’t take any morrrrrrrre.”

I’ve got some great news for all my fellow space buffs out there. The quest to find anti-matter in space will soon be in full swing. Today, the Air Force will be using one of their Galaxy transport jets to move the new Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, developed by those crazy kids at CERN, from Geneva to a new temporary home at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Let’s face it – when a transport jet with a space name is carrying space equipment to a space center you just know it’s going to be peachy keen. The icing on this special space cake being the super shiny future box they are shipping the contraption in. (If anyone is looking for Christmas ideas for me, I’d love one of these just taking up my office.)

So on to the important stuff such as “What in the world is the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer?” I’m so glad you’ve asked. The simple answer is that the AMS is a 2 billion dollar, 8.5 ton piece of equipment scheduled to be onboard the final space shuttle flight in February and then attached to the ISS. Once in orbit and activated, the AMS will be diligently searching for anti-matter in space. (Or possibly “Piiigggsss in Sppaaacceee…”) Wow. Tough room. The detector will have a twofold purpose, searching for both anti-matter and dark matter as well. Scientist believe the detector may even be able to return evidence of an “anti-universe” beyond our own, so be on the look-out for any bearded Spocks sometime in February.

Scientists are also hoping for a bonus round of research with the AMS which could include furthering our knowledge of energy charged cosmic rays which can only be studied in space. Personally, I thought Cosmic Rays was a fast food joint in Tomorrowland at Disney World but you learn something new every day. To give us some perspective on the AMS and all that we should hope for, I offer you this great quote from Italian physicist Roberto Battiston who is one of the AMS team members:

“It could turn up many surprises. Never have we been so aware of our ignorance — we know that we know nothing about what makes up all but 5 per cent of our universe.”

And that my friends is what makes me hope for the very best for the AMS and team. It’s also what makes space exploration speak to the very soul of the adventurer, and why we should continue our journeys rather than stop and quite literally watch the world, or galaxy, go by.

Living With a Geek – Goblet of Fire

I have the feeling I’m living in “The Twilight Zone”. Every evening this week, I have come home to find Pete playing “Halo” on Xbox Live. The past few nights, I have wanted to shoot people. Rather than take my frustrations out on actual people, I’d rather line up my sights on some video game baddies. But, alas, I find myself exploring music on “Youtube”.

My nephew, Craig, has offered to let me borrow one of (yes, that is one of) his Xbox 360 consoles. His only stipulation, I have to go to visit him, and go to Islands of Adventure. He’s been itching to wander around the new Harry Potter area. Oh darn. I guess if I must endure, I will make the effort. We did get a sneak peak when we were last there a few months ago. It looked stunning from the outside! You see, Pete read all the books. I have no interest in reading the books, but I have enjoyed the movies. He tells a great story of when he was up late reading “The Goblet of Fire” one night. There was an abandoned house down the road from us, when we lived in Lakeland. I hated that eyesore. Homeless people would occasionally make camp inside its awful walls. When he got to the part of “He who should not be named” coming to life, he noticed a glow outside. The crap shack was going up in flames! Pete woke me to tell, because he knew how happy that would make me! That’s love! Thankfully, nobody was injured and the volunteer fire department contained the blaze. But, honestly, I was so happy to see it burn to the ground. To this day, it is just an empty lot.

Hopefully, I will be able to take some stress out on some baddies tomorrow after dinner! “COD: Modern Warfare 2” is a wonderful thing, after a long day at work! Pete, hand over the controller, and nobody will get hurt. Well, except for the baddies in the video game. They won’t see me coming!

Image Comics Gets App Reader

Image Comics AppImage Comics launched its own comics app reader powered by Comixology’s popular digital reading platform. This is good news considering my own LCS didn’t have any Image Titles I really wanted to read in stock yesterday, and it would be fantastic to be able to get them digitally. Here is the official statement:

“With the launch of the Image Comics app, we have an opportunity to provide our creators with the digital support that, for many of them, was unattainable before,” says Image Publisher Eric Stephenson. “comiXology has established a very impressive track record of bringing independent content into the digital world. Today represents a milestone in our growth as a company and enables us to increase the availability of the fantastic titles we publish.”

“Our partnership with Image is indicative of our shared vision to help independent creators thrive in the traditional print community as well as the explosive digital marketplace,” adds David Steinberger, CEO of comiXology. “The demand for creator-owned content is at an all time high, and we are thrilled to be able to provide fans with what they want. We’re lucky now to work directly with Image and to offer the creators a clear path to the digital market.”

Iron Fist On The Big Screen

Iron FistSeveral comic sites and movie rumor sites are reporting that Danny Rand, a.k.a Iron Fist will be finding his way to the big screen. Marvel Entertainment has hired Rich Wilkes (xXx) to pen a script. This will be attempt number 2 at bringing the kung-fu master to screen after a failed attempt in 2000. That attempt was designed for Ray Park, but they could never keep a director on the project. Hopefully Ray Park would still be up for this movie since he hasn’t aged a day since Phantom Menace.
