“They’ve gone to plaid!”

Faster and faster they go, where they’ll stop nobody knows. With the 1.2 GHZ dual core chip still considered to be a top notch contender, Qualcomm’s Vice President of product management Mark Frankel confirmed that the company is set to ship a 1.5 GHZ dual core QSD8672 chip just before 2011. Frankel went on to say that the new Snapdragon is slated to take up residence in not only smartphones but low cost laptops and tablet PC’s as well. A few chip buyers are even said to have an aggressive production schedule in place which may see their wares hit the market before Christmas. Now that’s moving.

So what can we expect of the latest and greatest Qualcomm processor offering? The new 8672 is based on the established ARM design and will have the ability to clock each core independently in order to get the most in terms of performance and battery life. 1080p video playback, DDR2 and DDR3 as well as HDMI interfaces are just some of the additional goodies on Qualcomms platter.

Personally, I can’t wait to see what the mod community is able to do with the devices this little jewel finds its way into.

Mass Effect 2 Coming to PS3

CALLING ALL PS3 Fans!!!!

Mass Effect 2 PS3

Bioware has confirmed that Mass Effect 2 will be coming to the PS3 in January of 2011. Kind of weird, cause I always thought Mass Effect would be Microsoft only. To this news, Microsoft has confirmed that Mass Effect 1 will remain an Xbox title only. Mass Effect 2 for the PS3 will ship with “hours of bonus content,” but we are not sure what the bonus content is. This is good news for the PS3 fans cause it is such an awesome game.

Star Wars Celebration V: Dark Horse Comics Announcements

Sorry to the tardy nature of the post kids, but the Giggaheim office is still recovering from the stellar weekend we had in Orlando. A short podcast is up if you prefer to listen to the news and summary of events on the Giggaheim Podcast page.

Dark Horse comics has, for the most part, been a bit quiet lately. The comics publisher normally has a few hot, and well known properties that people associate with them and Star Wars is probably the largest. At Celebration V VP of publishing Randy Stradley came to celebrate the twenty year alliance by announcing the following:

Dark Horse Comics Star Wars NewsStar Wars: Crimson Empire 3 comic in 2011. Creative team: Mike Richardson & Randy Stradley will be writing, and Dave Dorman will paint covers. Six issue series starts in March 2011.

Legacy – War Six issue series continues the adventures of Cade Skywalker and evil Sith Emporer Darth Krayt. John Ostrander & Jan Duursema will be creating this series. Jan teased a bit about the series:

“…Not everyone is going to survive this one. The Jedi, Galactic Alliance, Imperial Knights, and Cade Skywalker must all band together to quell the tide of the rising Sith Empire….”

Look for that series to resume this December.

Boba Fett – Blood Ties Invasion writer Tom Taylor is writing a tale where Jango’s decisions have an impact on his son. Chris Scalf will be painting this series.

The Force Unleashed II this graphic novel will come out in October in time for the video game release. In case the force isn’t with you or your gaming skills you can still read the story through the eyes of Boba Fett. Creative team includes: Haden Blackman & Omar Francia.

Darth Vader and the Lost Command – Haden Blackman is also penning a series that starts in January of 2011. Vader travels to the Ghost Nebula to recover someone for Grand Moff Tarkin.

In other news, The Old Republic – Threat of Peace will conclude in September and be followed with Blood of the Empire. A story that takes place before Darth Bane, Knight Errant – Aflame will hit in October as well. The story is about young Jedi Knight’s first mission into the Sith Empire alone. Dark Horse Also plans on having a 20th anniversary hard cover edition of Dark Empire. Signed plates will be made available, and omnibus editions of Droids and Ewoks will be making their way to your local comic shop as well.

Space? Eh, that’s just a bunch of garbage…

Wouldn’t you just know it, those crazy kids over at DARPA are up to their regular shenanigans again. So what’s on the fix-it list this time? Space. Well, not space itself of course but all the crap we humans have managed to lob up there in the past couple of decades. Turns out there is enough clutter comprised of dead satellites, abandoned spacecraft, lost tools from spacewalks and possibly my grandfathers 87 Cadillac to have the global space community on alert regarding the safety of the International Space Station and plenty of other key pieces of our digital infrastructure up in space.

If you are a Futurama fan like myself, you may well remember the episode where humanity decided to pack up all the garbage on earth and blast it into deep space via a rocket. You may also remember that the whole plan came back to bite them in their futuristic ass. While we may not have piled everything up in one mighty heap we have cluttered the sky piece by piece over the years. Enter the “Electronic Debris Eliminator” or “EDDE.” Here is a snippet of explanation from the fine folks over at popsci.com:

“The Electrodynamic Debris Eliminator, or EDDE, is the brainchild of engineers at Star Inc. and ostensibly the DARPA backers that are funding its development. In practice, EDDE would zip around low earth orbit snaring bits of space garbage in its many nets where they cannot be a menace to other orbiting spacecraft. Star’s CEO estimates that over seven years, 12 EDDE craft could clean up all 2,465 objects over 4.5 pounds that are currently being tracked through LEO.Once EDDE has a piece of space junk cornered, it can either hurl it into the South Pacific where it has little chance of doing any harm, or put it on a trajectory to burn up during re-entry. Or, Star insists, the pieces of junk could be recycled right there in space to create raw materials for the construction of future orbiting space stations or satellites.”

Sounds pretty cool right? Things that sound pretty cool in tech are usually decades off right? Wrong. The engineers over at Star Inc. are working with usable tech right now and have a test flight scheduled for 2013. Yowsah. Here’s hoping for the best in the prospect of keeping the heavens as clutter free as possible. And just think, if this thing works it means you can feel better about that time you took the malfunctioning TIVO outside and slung it into what surely was low earth orbit. Just sayin.
