I Have Issues Review: Blankets

Blankets by Craig SmithOver the next few weeks the Giggaheim will feature common black and white independent graphic novels you can get from your local library in the I Have Issues column.

I had heard good things about BLANKETS around the web and on popular podcasts like Fanboy Radio, but had not found a copy locally until I hit my library a while back. The local library had 3 copies, and all of them had been on a heavy circulation/checkout rotation. I grabbed the lone copy, and headed home to take it in. Unlike some other black and white graphic novels, Craig Smith’s artwork doesn’t take a while to adjust to. What I mean is, his illustrations are clear, and his art style does not clutter the page with thick inking lines, or clutter the page which would force you to stare at the panels and layouts to make sense of them.

Page from BlanketsThe story takes a while to develop, and admittedly, the books to a few days to read. Craig Smith seems to share a vast majority of himself as his story dives into his childhood and progresses to the crux; and awkward romance that helps develop our main character into a self-sustaining man. Although a long journey, the story is flushed out with great detail and character development as we follow his growth through emotional boundaries and strict Christian environment, into a free-thinking artist. The observations and memories shared through the book are poignant, and remind me of independent filmmakers of the 1990s. I used to call them “window Movies” since they seem to show a brief time period of a character with no clear resolution. BLANKETS differs by delivering a complete journey through adolescence.

Smith’s illustrations are clearly rendered with easy to follow layouts; creating a dreamy atmosphere of gossamer remembrance. While there weren’t any “stand out” scenes or moments to me, the entire work has a brilliant atmosphere of intimacy as if you got to share the innermost part of someone else’s life. BLANKETS is a book that I would recommend to a teenager who would want something different to read, and perhaps the journey found in those pages would help illuminate someone else’s path through life.

I Have Issues Review: Incognegro

IncognegroOver the next few weeks the Giggaheim will feature common Black and White independent graphic novels you can get from your local library in the I Have Issues column. The inaugural review of INCOGNEGRO: A GRAPHIC MYSTERY isn’t “independent” by any means. The Vertigo label is DC Comics alternative label for creator owned works, but it’s corporate structure and publications set it far aside from independent, however, this particular book continues to be shelved under independent graphic novels in books stored across America, so it qualifies for now.

INCOGNEGRO is written by Mat Johnson and illustrated artwork by Warren Pleece, and I implore you to read the forward and Author’s notes before reading the book. The book is about lynchings that were prevalent in the deep south in the 1930s, nad one man’s ability to bring them to light due to his genetic make-up. The main character is Zane Pinchback; famous reporter from Harlem: The Incognegro. We catch Incognegro in action, witnessing Zane penetrate the folds of Klansmen and townies with his lighter skin and wavy hair that spares him from the racial profiling, so he can report the lynching to the readers up north. Zane wants to write pieces for the Harlem newspaper that will give him credit and wants more out of life, when one last case catches his eye, and brings him closer to danger than ever before.

Artwork from IncognegroOverall the book was engaging, cleanly illustrated in black and white pencils, and had a clearly defined story structure that most independent/smaller books lack. The rise and fall of action and development were evenly distributed, and the action punctuated the beats well. My only criticism of the book might be that the black and white format of the book might have harmed Pleece’s efforts to clearly define the differences between the Incognegro and the rest of the town folk. The facial structures weren’t all the same, but eventually the main characters started to look and dress the same, blending into one character. Also, the color might have helped illustrated the Incognegro’s special traits to blend in a little better.

The book is a quick read; clocking in at about 30 minutes. So it’s good for a visit to a waiting room, or getting your tires changed. If you see it in your local library and fancy an off-beat and quick read, pick up INCOGNEGRO. For a quick taste of life in the south during the 1930s.

Harmonix and the Super Bowl Halftime show

Now when I first learned that the Super Bowl Halftime show was going to be performed by my idol band The Who, I was more than happy to watch the show. What I didn’t realize was that Harmonix had a little trick up its sleave in that it was going to release a version of the halftime show as downloadable content right after the game and trust me it is a lot of fun to play and it is worth it. The song only cost $2 (160MS) and is the full Super Bowl version. Here is a video capture I did last night of the song in  action on Rock Band. To compare I’ll also put up The Who’s performance as well.

Enjoy.

It was a very cool stage also.

IT WAS AWESOME…..

Massive collection of good car wallpapers

As you may have already guessed, we here at The Giggaheim are insane fans of the BBC show Top Gear. Now as my wallpapers are concerned I love a good collection of different wallpapers that rotate on my desktop. Most newer computers now-a-days allow you to rotate the wallpaper with a randomized set of wallpapers in the background. I have over a 500 different wallpapers that cycle randomly and change every minute. I can not stand looking at the same image every-time I turn my computer on.

So on occasion I go wallpaper hunting on the net. For those of you that are the same way, here is a link to some insanely good wallpapers I found on Top Gear’s website. There are 29 pages of different wallpapers, with a total collection calculated at about 350 total different images; all car related. This is just a gold-mine. Thanks again Top Gear, for being the only sane site that shares there content with the rest of the world.

Something new on the Blu-ray front

So while scoping out the blu-ray section at my local Best Buy, I decided to buy Up on blu-ray because it was only $20. Far cheaper from is normal $35 price tag. I guess in a effect to sell more blu-ray copies, Disney has decided to give the following features in the package along with the blu-ray. You now get a DVD version of the movie, a digital copy (which is normal) and, as it turns out, the ability to stream the movie over on your computer from Disney’s new video streaming site. I noticed it when I was downloading the digital copy in iTunes. I also found out that as you buy certain disney movies you can unlock specific movies to then be viewed on the site. Currently there are only 12 movies on the queue but more are expected since the site is still in beta.

Check it out here:

You just enter the same code as the digital download and your good to go.

I have Issues Picks of the Week: 2.3.2010

Siege #2I Have Issues is a comic book review on the previous week’s new releases. SPOILER WARNING: if you haven’t read your books yet, read no further. These reviews will be posted a few days after comic book release day to give you time to read them so that you can throw your two cents in about what you thought of these books. The picks are currently limited, due to the small selection available in my local comic book shops, but hopefully that will change in a few months. Feel free to visit the Giggaheim.com Forums and start your non-censored, no-holds-barred thread on your favorite books. On with the reviews:

Siege #2 continues to exemplify what an event should be. Concise, fast paced, and filled with consequential actions. Bendis has done an admirable job of tying together plots from the past few years to put a worthy ending to a very creative era in Marvel Comics history. In the past I haven’t had much patience with Bendis’ previous efforts in large events, but have always found them fun to reread. The last event, Secret Invasion, was especially cluttered with dialogue, and any sign of epic struggle and heroic effort was lost in a quagmire of dialog in the Savage Land. Initially I was afraid of the following when I first got wind of “Siege”:

It would be painfully drawn out like Zulu, or Two Towers

Gods would not be represented as immortal powers that walk the earth

Everything in Siege would be easily undone in six issues of Avengers, so no real risk would be taken. I

was wrong. You win Brian. This event has been a blast. Without spoiling plot-points I will say that there ARE consequences. There are ore than one instances of characters getting their “Due”. There are about 4 fist-pumping scenes. And the feeling of anticipation for the next issue is still present. If you want to see what happens in the book, do yourself a favor, and spend $3.99. Coiple’s art alone is worth the price of admission.

Top Gear Season 13

To those of us Top Gear fans, something interesting has made it on not only iTunes but now xbox live. The first 2 episodes of the new season have made their way to the US marketplaces for $1.99 (160 MS) each. I downloaded these episodes last night which are each 1 hour long and they were fantastic.

Episode 1: Contained an most familiar face, The Stig; with him “reveling” his identity. Michael Schumacher, famous F1 race car driver and Ferrari designer showed his face under the infamous Stig helmet. There is a lot to decide here. “Is he really the Stig?” Doubtful, because the relationship with the Stig has always been,”If someone finds out who you are, you are fired,” and another Stig is chosen.

Episode 2 (fantastic episode): showed off the new Lamborghini Murcielago, which is the last one that will ever be designed and made and it reached 200 MPH for Richard Hammond. Later in the episode I saw the best drag race I had ever seen on Top Gear between 2 legendary super-cars. All I am saying is Bugatti Veyron and Mclaren F1……thats all I’m saying……

I’ll let you decide which car takes the crown but is was an awesome drag race.

It is shaping up to be an amazing season.
