SMALLVILLE: Absolute Justice Teaser Trailer

The teaser for the upcoming Justic Society episode of Smallville was just released. I know Geoff Johns was working on these episodes, so I’m looking forward to the Smallville interpretation.

I Have Issues Picks of the Week 11.18.2009

I Have Issues is a comic book review on the previous week’s new releases. SPOILER WARNING: if you haven’t read your books yet, read no further. These reviews will be posted a few days after comic book release day to give you time to read them so that you can throw your two cents in about what you thought of these books. The picks are currently limited, due to the small selection available in my local comic book shops, but hopefully that will change in a few months. Feel free to visit the Giggaheim.com Forums and start your non-censored, no-holds-barred thread on your favorite books. On with the review

FLSREB Cv5 dsFlash Rebirth #5

Written by Geoff Johns
art and covers by Ethan van Sciver

This almost wasn’t my pick of the week. As a fan of the Flash I must say this Rebirth series has left me wanting a bit, but the last pages of issue #4 made me salivate for this issue. Instead of stewing in concern for the hero for 4-6 weeks, I was instead wondering how Thawn was going to come back from the inevitable beat down he was about to experience. But luckily, Johns flexed his abilities, and wrote a great speedster fight. It doesn’t top the best speedster fight of all time, it was a great moment in this story, and I cannot wait to revisit it after the series is done.

This particular issue finally addressed the issue of Barry’s parents and why that motivated him.  Johns writes on that slippery slope of time travel conundrums well, and we begin to see ramifications of speedsters with abilities like Thawn and Barry’s, and what they do when used for both good and evil. From a writing standpoint, the logic remains sound as this type of story could have only wrapped up in the last issue. When people threaten to alter timelines, and fight at the speed of light, the conclusion will be a whirlwind, and have a sense of finality.

So what happened in the issue? Why was it better than the other candidates this week? Well, this issue fixed many, many things that seemed so wrong with the Flash book for the past 3 years. I am a huge fan of Wally, and like many other readers, Wally’s run on Flash after Infinite Crisis wasn’t the strongest run. I didn’t mind THAT he had kids, but I just felt the book dragged because they had to be addressed time and again. The kids had aspects of the powers, and like the Legion of Super Heroes or X-men in the Marvel, they only had one real power. I was okay with all that, but on a selfish level, I had read about the future Kid-Flash Iris West in The Kingdom, and the Cobalt Blue storylines. This pigtailed Irish would be fun to read about, but she wasn’t a speedster. Iris West was just a shadow of the future we had seen. Jai seemed to freak people out by having muscles, but frankly I never noticed. I honestly liked the family dynamic I read in The Kingdom, and  wanted to read the stories that would fill int eh gaps between. Flash Rebirth #5 fixed the power problem, and Iris now has all the powers of a speedster, and is even Impulse now. Good fix Geoff.

One thing I was really curious about was “Wally’s New Look” that was hinted at when Ethan van Sciver would give interviews on Word Balloon or Newsarama. I was curious more than anything, but afraid that Wally would be altered yet again. When we got to the costume changes, I just kinda shrugged my shoulders. So what? I’m not sure I can speak for long-term readers, but we already knew this trick from Wally’s run when he began to embrace the speed force more and more, and  there didn’t seem to be a big difference in anyone’s costumes. Wally….still looked like the Flash with a Batman nose, Impulse looked like Impulse, Jesse Quick got a biit of a makeover, but I’m sure she’ll still be Liberty Bell in JSA.  What was new?

It was nice to see why the Reverse Flash is the top[ Flash villain. The rogues are fantastic, but there is reason that Flash fans feel that Reverse Flash is the top villain for the Flash, and this issue clearly illustrates that. Speaking of illustration, Ethan Van Sciver’s work on this book continues to shine. Ethan’s pencils accompany John’s story well, and that is no easy task to draw the fastest people alive. The effects of Jay’s Sound attack, and the running effects clearly helped tell the story. Despite the schedule on this book, van Sciver has joined the ranks of artists that I don’t mind waiting for.

I love Superboy Prime. I’ve been buying everything with him in it since he started culling the DC herd. And it was just a joyful romp to watch the super-brat that was imprisoned on our planet as a reader have to deal with the Blackest Night in this book. My only complaint was that this story was too short. SbP is a delightful exercise to see the author address the fan criticism, and break the 4th wall. The artwork was a bit thick for me, which I’m not sure was the pencils or the inks, but I thought the heavy lines made the book a bit 1980. One thing I’ll also never understand is why computers are never illustrated for their time. I’m not sure who still uses a CRT monitor anymore, but it’s been a long time since I’ve seen one, and I live in a part of Florida that is slow to adopt to modern technology. Good story, I’m looking forward to the follow up. The back-up Legion Story was good, but I was never much of a Legion reader. I loves the Crisis crossovers, but I wasn’t a fan of magic stories, or stories where the lovers wish they could touch. If I wanted that story, I’d read stories about Rouge.

Invincible68Invincible #68

Story Robert Kirkman
art & cover Ryan Ottley & FCO Plascencia

At first glance, this issue is blah. Invincible fights a monster, and flies around with his girlfriend, but the Last page was one of those “HOLY SHIT” moments that makes me happy I buy Invincible monthly. The extra plotlines that are bubbling to the surface like Atom Eve’s Father, and Invincible’s growing apathy continue to make this book one of the best cape books being published today.  After the last page of this issue, I’m just as sure this will be a hell of thrill ride for the next few months.

Game Review: Left4Dead2

left_4_dead_2_frontcover_large_8jHmYBS5Wf77E60When I first reviewed the demo, I was excited for this game, and equally excited to play the full version. Thanks to GameFly, the full version arrived in my mailbox, and after I watched the Star Trek BluRay 5 times, I popped in the game, and played through the first level before passing out from my all day geek-gasm.

Left4Dead was one of those games that I was late the party for. I wasn’t interested in a zombie shooter since Halo3 and then Gears of War 2 were all the shooters I needed. But, my buddies in the office eventually persuaded me to give it a go and I was glad I did. The game has great motion capture where it looked like these zombies were actually running at you, and dodging gun fire. The lighting was intense, the AI’s shadow detection was spot on, and the sound design was incredible. It was an immersive experience that was intense and slightly frightening the first time through. And with repeat play, the game was still just as fun. If I had a rough day at work, I could pop in my copy, and see some heads splatter.

Any sequel to a game is a gamble and when you’re holding the copy in your hands at the store you begin to wonder; Will they change the controls? Will there be a completely different graphic look to the game? Left4Dead2 never gave me a sense of worry. Honestly, what could go wrong? Every mission seemed to flow into the other, and it seemed like this zombie infected world could last forever. What could they improve, or take away in the name of improving the game? Well I’m glad to report, they didn’t remove anything bad, and that this game is capitally enjoyable.

The NPCs are enjoyable companions once again with their own personalities that helps make the game even more entertaining and go faster. The NPCs seem to help out a bit more in this game than in the first. I always felt that I was stuck with 3 nominally lazy people in order to survive in the first game, but the AI was cranked up in the sequel, and it feels like there is now a solid team of 4 survivors struggling together. The game play is the same. There aren’t any extra controls, or new combos to learn, but there is now a wider variety of options available to you.

Melee weapons have been added, as well as several additional guns and even large weapons such as grenade launchers. The melee weapons are a real treat. There’s no ammo to worry about, and everything from the crow bar, to the cricket bat, the chainsaw, and the samurai sword are all brilliant. The extra gore that splatters on screen is fantastic, but be aware of taking damage. The zombies will dodge your swings, and with close quarters fighting, you stand to take more damage, especially when the hoards show up.

L4D2 thumbAnother great addition are the little side missions in the game that are necessary to help the team progress from point A to point B. Instead wandering around, you now encounter different people and tasks that make the game more enjoyable. The additional medical and incendiary devices are clever as well. Vomit, adrenaline shots, and a defribulator are all great additions to the quest, and give you options for helping the survivors. And a small feature I really enjoyed was the scrolling list of achievements as the game loads, which saves me from jumping into menus.

The only downside I would have are the graphics. After playing CoDMW2, everything looks like playschool, but I was hoping for a bit more of an upgrade to see more realistic set of villains and environments. The sound design is still top notch with the game utilizing all my surround sound to create a lush audio environment to immerse the player. The new southern music is a great addition, furthering the experience of being trapped in a post-apocalyptic New Orleans. This game will be a great addition to my shelf, and I’m sure I will now have a new favorite to throw into my Xbox and blow off some steam.

GL coprs42Green Lantern Corps #42
kyledeadWritten by Peter J. Tomasi
Art and cover by Patrick Gleason and Rebecca Buchman
Variant cover by Greg Horn

This was my pick of the week for many reasons but overall it was a great book. Tomasi continues to write a good story, and like his Green Lantern Counterpart johns, balances a bevy of characters with ease. The main shock of the book of course is that Kyle dies trying to buy his teammates more time to save the Oan Power Battery. The Blackest Night story has been infecting the rest of the DC books (as you can see from the bottom reviews), but the Green Lantern Corps continues to march along a steady pace. I’m looking forward to the next issue, and seeing how the corps will defend the battery, and to see if Guy will be worth anything as a Red Lantern.
I always thought there were way too many Green Lanterns from Earth, but I was sad to see Kyle buy the farm. Frankly, I’m one of 5 people out there who liked Kyle, and frankly, I think DC continues to stumble with him. I really like him as ION, and thought that character had a boat load of potential, but apparently it wasn’t selling. He had a great feature n Sinestro Corps War, and I was hopeful for a good run of Kyle in the future. Alas, not much has happened, and he will be laid to rest. RIP Kyle, you were the torchbearer when others had nothing but hate for you.

fables 90Fables #90
Written by Bill Willingham
Art by Mark Buckingham and Steve Leialoha
Cover by Joao Ruas

This can be summed up quickly. This story line continues in the same vein as it has the last 3 issues, and persuaded me to buy Fables in trade. The amount of time between issues versus the amount of progress in the issue hasn’t made for entertaining reading. Bufkin continues his campaign against Baba Yaga, and Totenkinder has a totem and advice for those left behind on the farm The End. Great art as always, it just seems this book continues on the same great path it has been on for a while. Buckingham illustrates a great book; its pace is just too slow for me to hang with month by month.

JSACobra6JSA vs Cobra
Written by Eric Trautmann
Art by Don Kramer and Michael Babinski
Cover by Gene Ha
I finished this story out, and it’s not a bad little JSA take. I believe it’s a good story for people to get their feet wet, and see how the JSA works, and what the team dynamic is like. It’s low on inter-team drama but the art and story are classic JSA, and this should be fun to pull out of the long box and read on a rainy day.

booster26Booster Gold #26
Written by Dan Jurgen and Matt Sturges
Art by Dan Jurgens, Mike Norton and Norm Rapmund
Cover by Dan Jurgens and Norm Rapmund

I dropped this title a while back for two reasons:
1) Johns left the book to do what he’s doing now, and frankly, I needed a good excuse to cull my pull list
2) The storyline had become a bit repetitive: Save Ted Kord.
I liked the Blue and Gold, but I’m sincerely hoping Blackest Night will put Booster’s quest to save Ted Kord and leap back home to rest. Wasn’t a bad tie-in, but hasn’t convinced me to return to the title on a regular pull.

rebels10Rebels #10
Written by Tony Bedard
Art by Andy Clarke
Cover by Kalman Andrasofszky

I have never read Rebels before due to lack of interest, but the crossover has done its job by making me curious about this book and the characters within. I’m curious to see what happens when a Brainiac gets a power ring.

PLEASE BBC, PLEASE

Please BBC, PLEASE release Top Gear earlier in the US. These trailers look so good. Why are we still 4 years behind in the episodes.

Teaser Trailer is out for Kick-Ass

The teaser trailer is out for Kick-Ass. This is a really entertaining comic book series by Mark Millar (Wanted, The Ultimates), and John Romita Jr. (Spider-Man, World War Hulk). It isn’t fully published yet, and the publishing schedule is sporadic at best, but the book is a really fun read. I hope the movie is as entertaining.
